Brazilian beef exports totaled USD 5.5 billion in 2016 with over 1.4 million tons shipped abroad. The data was made public this Wednesday (11) by the Association of Brazilian Beef Exporters (Abiec) and shows a decline of 7% in revenues in comparison to 2015, despite the 1% increase in volume of exports.

The association attributed the results to a depreciation of the foreign exchange rate and situated problems in important markets for Brazilian beef, such as Russia, Venezuela and Egypt.

The North Africa country was the second largest destination in volume for Brazilian exports, trailing only Hong Kong. The Egyptian market consumed 176,900 tons in the year. In revenues, however, it came only in the fourth position with USD 551.3 million and stayed behind Hong Kong, European Union and China.

In the comparison to 2015, exports to Egypt declined 9.7% in volume and 16.6% in revenues.

Another Arab country that stood out last year was Saudi Arabia, the ninth largest destination in volume and tenth in revenues. With the lifting of the embargo to Brazilian beef at the end of 2015, the country replaced Algeria in the top ten ranking of destinations. Saudis imported 29,300 tons, totaling USD 112.5 million.

In December, Brazilian exports totaled USD 455 million, an increase of 7.4% in comparison to November and reached 113,400 tons, up 13.8% over the previous month. In volume, Egypt was the seventh largest destination in the month, while Saudi Arabia came in eighth, followed by the United Arab Emirates in tenth.

Abiec is expecting exports to rebound this year, increasing in both volume and revenues. In a statement, the association has said that it will also focus on new markets such as South Korea, Taiwan, Indonesia, Canada, Mexico and Japan, as well as the United States and European Union, where it’s planning to expand Brazil’s share in the market.
