Prof Datuk Dr Mohd Daud Bakar is now the president of the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM).

In a statement, the university said the appointment was consented by IIUM's constitutional head Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah.

Mohd Daud fills the post that was left vacant following the resignation of Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik whose appointment as IIUM president last year sparked controversy.

An Islamic finance expert, Mohd Daud is former deputy rector in charge of students' affairs from 2002 to 2005.

Mohd Daud is also the board chairman of Yayasan Pembangunan Ekonomi Islam Malaysia (YaPeim).
