Malaysia is the most innovative country of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) but the divide between it and world leader Switzerland has grown on the Global Innovation Index (GII) released on July 10 by Cornell, INSEAD and the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO).

Malaysia edged out the United Arab Emirates to be the OIC’s innovation leader on this year’s GII. The Southeast Asian nation improved its overall score by 0.44 to 43.16, which boosted its ranking from 37th last year to 35th on the GII 2018.

However, despite its improved score, there was a wider gap between Malaysia and top-ranked Switzerland this year compared to 2017: 25.24 this year versus 24.97 last year.

UAE and Turkey round up the OIC’s top three innovation leaders.

UAE’s score dipped 0.66, pushing down its ranking from 35th last year to 38th on GII 2018.

Turkey’s score also dropped, from 38.90 last year to 37.42 this year. Its ranking plunged from 43rd last year to 50th on GII 2018.

As a group, the OIC countries fared worse for innovation on GII 2018 compared to last year. The average score per OIC country dropped from 28.62 in 2017 to 27.91 this year.

The Global Innovation Index (GII) ranks economies’ innovation capabilities and results across main indicators institutions, human capital and research, infrastructure, market sophistication, business sophistication, knowledge and technology outputs and creative outputs.

The GII 2018 ranked 126 economies, 36 of which are OIC member countries.
