The Dubai Culture and Arts Authority hopes the tenth edition of its Dubai International Arabic Calligraphy Exhibition will help promote the emirate as an incubator for the artform, according to UAE official news agency WAM on Thursday.
“[The exhibition] aims to highlight the role of calligraphy in supporting the creative economy of the emirate and to strengthen efforts to promote the Arabic language and expand its scope of use to cover all fields,” WAM reported quoting Dubai Culture chairperson Abdul Rahman bin Mohamed Al Owais.
The exhibition, which takes place every two years, will show the work of local and over 50 international calligraphers, said WAM.
Dubai Culture hopes the exhibition will also promote the idea of strategic partnerships with cultural and artistic industries locally, regionally and globally in support of the “UAE Soft Power Strategy”, added Al Owais.
UAE’s Soft Power Strategy was launched in Sep 2017 to increase the country’s global reputation abroad by highlighting its identity, heritage, and culture.
One of its four main objectives is to establish the country as a regional capital for culture, art and tourism.
The Dubai International Arabic Calligraphy Exhibition this year will focus on the use of calligraphy in modern designs and allow artists to adapt it in a way that resonates with the modern artistic cultures of Arab and Islamic societies, according to head of the exhibition committee Dr Salah Al Qassim.
The exhibition opens Apr 27 and closes Dubai Art Season 2019 on May 5.
