GrubMarket has acquired halal wholesaler Jana Food, the foodtech start-up said in a statement on Wednesday (Apr 21) without disclosing financial details of the deal.
The San Francisco-based start-up’s business comprises a commercial segment to grocery stores, meal-kit companies, and restaurants, as well as a direct-to-consumer segment. Its vertical software business, WholesaleWare, manages hundreds of millions of dollars of food wholesale activities annually, it said in a statement in February.
GrubMarket’s acquisition of Texas-based Jana Food will allow the halal wholesaler to get on its e-commerce platform to reach a wider customer base that includes over 5,000 grocery stores, over 8,000 restaurants, and over 2,000 corporate offices.
Family-owned Jana Food started business in 1992 with a focus on frozen foods, dry and fresh meats, and halal meat. Its own fleet of refrigerated trucks ships over 4,000 products from its 100,000 square foot facility in Arlington, Texas.
GrubMarket said Jana Food will continue to be managed by its current leadership team with Ala Ahmad as General Manager.
Jana Food joins a growing list of farmers, producers, and suppliers on GrubMarket’s platform. The start-up, that launched in 2014, has been on a buying spree of companies to grow its business. It most recently completed a $90 million Series D pre-IPO round of financing in October 2020 to fuel nationwide expansion. It has raised $182.1 million in funding over six rounds so far, according to data provider CrunchBase.
